The Weekly Rundown! My Traveling and Training Update.

Hello everyone, I've been on hiatus for the past couple weeks — I mean time has really gotten away from me... like ran right on by me! That said, this week's update is a bit less structured than my usual updates where I give you a brief synopsis of my training for the previous week. This week I have so many random things on my mind, so where to start?

I'll start here.

The good news is the hubby and I are still training for the ET Full Moon 51K in August. While our training is going well, the heat is already sweltering with Red Flag Warnings and temps regularly reaching the triple digits! IT.IS.HOT!

Yeah, I'm not quite sure when I arrived on Tatooine? Hey, didn't they film Star Wars in the Mojave? Well, turns out it was filmed in Death Valley on the other side of the Mojave, so I suppose you could say I practically do live on Tatooine. It just makes sense!

Well, I certainly hope you stay safe during your runs in the heat this summer. Please take precautions.

A large reason for my hiatus is that the hubby and I flew back to Michigan for a joint memorial service for my grandparents. Sadly my grandfather passed away in December 2019, after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. (He lived with it for quite a while). He was a WWII veteran and was honored with a 3-volley rifle salute. Initially my family planned to honor his memory in the Spring of 2020, however, Covid hit and the service was postponed.

Then more sad news, my grandmother passed away about a month ago. She succumbed to dementia, induced by stroke — hence the joint memorial service. Throughout my life, I was very close to my grandparents and losing them has been difficult, but I am grateful I got so many wonderful, memory filled years with them.

Though the trip home was bittersweet, I was able spend quality time with my closest family members and reflect on the things that matter. I also got a run in!

It had been over 2 years since I'd traveled back home! When Covid put a temporary halt to travel, I wasn't able to see my family or friends for over a year, but fortunately everyone remained safe and healthy throughout the pandemic... I truly hope your family stayed safe as well.

For me, a highlight of the trip was playing "race" with my young niece and nephew! (They are also great at monster hunting, by the way)!

My nephew is coming up on 3-years old in August, but this was the first time I got a chance to return home to meet him. I thought I'd see him last year, but I live over 2,000 miles away and well... alas. Since he's almost 3, we were instant pals.

In training news, I mentioned that the hubby and I are currently training for the 51k in August and it's going well.

Also, I'm concurrently finishing up the 10 half marathons in 10 weeks Rhino Races challenge — with just two more left to go! I signed up for the Rhino Races challenge as a way to break up the monotony of my long runs and earn a belt buckle when I finish! Hooray!

Lately the weeks have been a blur!

This past weekend I wanted to run about 20 miles on Saturday, so I ran a double on Juneteenth — I ran the Running with the Devil half marathon in the morning and the 10k in the evening.

The hubby joined me for the 10k since he had to work in the morning. Despite the heat, I placed 2nd in my age group on the half marathon and took 2nd woman overall in the 10k. The hubby took 3rd man overall in the 10k!

We also recently joined a local running group, but due to out of state travel and a few unrelated stressors, we missed the last couple weeks. Well, not to worry, we'll be back at it again this week.

As for this upcoming week, I won't list all my training in this post because it has been a bit more sporadic due to traveling, racing, etc., but I'm consistently running between 30 to 40 miles a week, depending on the week.

A side note.

We had a bump in the road last week (it's why we missed our last run group). Our downstairs A/C went kaput the same day our older dog, who is already on daily prescription medication for chronic bronchitis, had to go to the pet hospital due to a sudden bout of pneumonia.

We're not exactly sure how our pup contracted pneumonia, but I assume it's linked to her chronic bronchitis. Thankfully we sought medical treatment in time! I thought it looked bleak, but our veterinary clinic did an amazing job of caring for her! Also, it's lucky that the A/C unit has been replaced, so the pup can continue along her path of being on the mend in comfort.

I am so fortunate to be able to share my run journey with you.

I am fortunate that this week's setbacks were only temporary.

I am glad to reflect back on my progress even with a few added stressors.

I hope you've had a great week so far and hope you haven't had any setbacks. If you have, how do you manage your setbacks?

What races are you training for?

How are you dealing with running in the heat?

Thanks for reading and have a great week!
